Training with Injuries - Part 1

Can I keep training with an Injury?

 For this series of blogs, we will be talking about injuries, training, and how we navigate the two together.

Like most of us who play sport or train in the gym, you’ve likely had your fair share of injuries. Some not so bad that you barely notice it, and some so severe that you struggle to move afterwards.

No doubt this also means you’ve taken time off from training or games to let yourself heal. Sometimes you’re just not sure if, and when you can get back into doing what you love.

 What happens with an injury?

To state the obvious, when you’re injured, your body’s capacity and tolerance for load and stress is reduced which makes us susceptible to making injuries worse. Our normal strategy to avoid making things worse is to avoid exercises.

However there are TWO main problems with avoiding exercise:

1)      You don’t use it, you lose it! – you lose your progress, and you get weaker from a lack of training

2)      You’re missing out on what you love! – I don’t know about you, but I go crazy when I have to miss out on training

 Can I keep training?

So now to the most important question: Is it possible to keep training despite having an injury?

The short answer is YES!

Although what your training looks like may look different from your normal for a while.

What does that mean?

While your body is an injured state, we need to modify or substitute the types of exercise we complete with things that are safe for you to do, and progressively reload the body to its pre-injured capacity.

 MODIFY and SUBSTITUTE, and not AVOID?

Modifying training is the key, as the more you can safely train and do, the faster you get back to normal.

No doubt you’re sitting there thinking – Well HOW do I modify or substitute my training?
